A humpback whale surfaces in the swirling currents of Johnstone Strait not far from historic Telegraph Cove, British Columbia. Thousands of seabirds, such as those seen in the background, flock to the area annually for the fall herring runs. In early October, when local tourism dies down for the year, these inside passage waterways explode with life.
