This was one of many Black Skimmers that were blown onto our shores by Hurricane Dorian. The sun was setting and the light back-lite the wings and seemed to make the bill almost translucent as the bird was skimming for food in the shallow water left as the tide was heading out. Skimmers feed by skimming along the water with their bottom long narrow mandible in the water until they feel a fish. When contact is made they snap their bill shut. They often feed at night because they find food by touch, not sight.
