This handsome Pileated Woodpecker surprised me one morning when I heard him drumming close to the ground on his snag. He was completely hidden by the bramble so, I walked carefully past him and went to stand about 10 m away to see if he would climb up the tree. Luckily for me he did just that and so, I was able to catch his brilliant red cap under the blue sky while he waited for his mate.
