Swimming against the currents, dodging other aggressive males, and scraping his belly against the rocks in the shallow river sections, this Chum Salmon battles upstream to ensure his genes are passed to the next generation. Like all species of Pacific Salmon, chum are semelparous, meaning that they will only spawn once before they die. With every inch this chum battles up the river to fertilize a female's eggs, he brings himself closer to his own death.
