A moment so quick, if you aren't paying attention you might miss it. The fast motion and the quiet crunch, and just like that a life slips away. Amphipods are frequently preyed upon by a variety of shorebirds that probe their bills into the sand, searching for these small crustaceans. Laying in the sand, I watched this Western Sandpiper pulling amphipods from the sand and quickly swallowing them whole.
