Although I doubt this guy was displaying for me, I probably just pissed him off, he may have been showing off to his girlfriend. Smaller lakes, like the one this individual was seen in, can accommodate a single pair of breeding loons. In spring, breeding pairs return to their lakes separately, forming a monogamous relationship that typically lasts about 5 years. If one of them doesn't return one year, they will immediately search for a rebound. On this particular lake, there is a breeding pair. I wonder if it's love.
