Baby great blue heron. It was during a banding and data collection mission on the common eider in the islands of the St. Lawrence Estuary that I was able to observe this great blue heron nest. It was the first time I had seen one at eye level. Usually, the nests are perched very high. I had to count the gull nests at my feet. As I was counting them, a young great blue heron lifted its head to look at me. With my camera equipped with a short focal length, I was able to take its picture as I stood up. I left, watching it snuggle against its siblings. I should mention that this photo was taken as part of a scientific mission. Access to these islands is strictly prohibited to the public.
