I love to hear the drumming of the male Ruffed Grouse in the spring. This unique display takes place in the forest to attract the females. The deep thumping is iconic to the ears and if you ever get to witness this courting ritual, it is truly amazing. The wings beat for approx 10 seconds at various angles and speeds finishing off with a pose, tail feathers high and neck feathers puffed. Shooting in the dark forest, I had to have my speed up to freeze the action. A small stream of sunlight made its way through the canopy, lighting up the feathers at this moment frozen in time. Like a Maestro, he was conducting his own symphony!
