We were fortunate to have several memorable polar bear encounters during our time in Churchill. One that stood out, took place during a heavy snowfall when a mother with two cubs were traversing the rocks along Hudson Bay. As they perched overlooking the bay, a playful raven appeared and taunted them by flying low as if to land on them but stayed just out of reach. One cub stood up and tried swatting the bird but no success. Held in high regard in Canadian Indigenous culture, the raven is often portrayed as both a trickster as well as a symbol of good luck. He lived up to both traits that day, being a jokester to the bears and a moment of good fortune for us to be able to witness the captivating interaction.
