The Indigenous Dene community of Dettah, home to roughly 200 people, is accessible during winter via a 5km ice road from Yellowknife or a longer more winding road over land. The road is extremely wide, so there's plenty of room to pull over. During the day, tour buses visit the area but at night it's quiet. There were some unnerving cracking and groaning sounds from the ice when the occasional vehicle passed. Locals reassured me that it's safe and carefully monitored and maintained!
