I only heard the terms Waning Gibbous and Waxing Gibbous recently and with being out surrounded by ocean and sky, the two entities that are directly impacted by these terms I thought I should learn a little more. Reading these words for the first time too? Well they are in reference to our moon. Waning Gibbous is the moon fading away after being full and Waxing, well that is our current phase and is the moon growing (receiving more light from the sun) to become full. My favourite part about these names, is that Gibbous is actually derived from the Latin word Gibbosus which means Humpbacked. And there certainly are a lot of active humpbacks around the reserve these days! Not necessarily related, but potentially. With the large tides at the moment, caused by the pull of the moon’s gravity in correlation to its closeness with us, this can cause food sources to surge along with the ebbs and flows of the ocean.
