A beautiful red tinted sun makes for a “poisoned gift” (un cadeau empoisonné in French), since it is caused by wildfires that tint it this beautiful red. Increasingly widespread wildfires in 2025 have devastating effects for wildlife, and for those who have lost their home. The smoke associated with these wildfires also affects air quality for everyone, and in particular for those struggling (like myself) with asthma or other chronic conditions and have to monitor air quality, including several weeks in the summer 2025 here in Atlantic Canada and many areas in Canada. This photo was challenging to take with my asthma. Confined indoors several days in a row with the poor air quality, I went out briefly on the third day with a N95 mask to try and capture the sheer beauty of this “poisoned gift”. Looking at the sky, as the sun was setting and the very dark silhouettes of the tree branches framed this red sun, it had an "eerie effect". The increase in wildfires in many parts of Canada is part of the wild weather we experienced in 2025.
