I was at one of my favorite places for birding, Esquimalt Lagoon Bird Sanctuary on Vancouver Island. During winter, you can count on spotting dunlin sandpipers as they overwinter there. I made my way to where I knew they would be on an outcrop of the shoreline. Watching them drill down into the shoreline in search of small invertebrates like insects, marine worms, and crustaceans is always entertaining. This little one was precariously navigating a muddy incline covered in sea grass.
