It's spring, and the tiny feet of this male rufous hummingbird cling to a thorny branch, resting between its exertions to collect nectar. I grew fond of this little one as I often observed it in a particular area I was staying in Victoria, BC, always sitting on the same favorite perches. It was fun to just watch it and it's tiny behaviors, and oh my goodness, the hummingbird drama from time to time, chasing other males off, hissing and spatting with them, the red and gold flashes of their gorgets as they played aerial combat. Then there are the courtship displays of flying high up in the air and diving downward while making loud buzzing and trilling noises. It's a tiny bird with a BIG attitude, and you definitely know when they are in the area during spring! No wonder he needed a rest!
