A day of birding around Victoria BC and I always welcome seeing the hooded mergansers. The males especially with their flashy crest are an impressive sight to see. The head feathers of a male Hooded Merganser are known as a crest, a fan-shaped hood that can be raised or lowered for display, particularly during courtship. This reveals a striking black and white pattern against their dark head and neck. The collapsible crest is what gives the duck its name, as "hood" refering to it's head covering.
