Fox Kits at Dawn

We arrived long before sunrise, while the landscape was still dark and quiet. Knowing there was a fox den in the area, we settled in at a respectful distance and waited. For hours, nothing moved. The den remained silent, and as the morning passed, it became increasingly difficult to know whether the kits would appear at all. Then, without warning, two young Red Fox kits emerged from beneath the weathered structure. At first, only their faces appeared at the entrance. They paused, watched, and listened before gradually becoming more confident and venturing farther into the open. What followed was one of the most memorable wildlife encounters I have experienced. The kits remained close to one another, constantly interacting as they explored the area around the den. Every movement felt new and deliberate, from their cautious first steps into the morning light to their curiosity about the world beyond the safety of their shelter.
