While out touring Clayoquot Sound by boat, we saw many black bears foraging along the rocky shores, but many of them did so facing away from the water, keeping an eye on the forest for the one prominent threat they may face: another, larger black bear. This one, however, was quite large himself, so he did not have to keep such a watchful eye on the forest. He could simply choose the most comfortable spot to sit while he scraped barnacles and bivalves off the large rocks. Lucky for me, that spot had him facing towards the water, which put us face to face, whenever he lifted his head to chew.
