A mother Long-eared Owl sat quietly with her four owlets, nestled together in the safety of their home. Looking through my lens, I had no way of knowing I was witnessing the final moments this family would ever spend together in that nest. Meteorologists had warned that severe thunderstorms would develop that afternoon. By evening, powerful winds, heavy rain, and hail had swept through southern Manitoba. When I return the following day, the nest was gone. Two of the owlets were on the ground beneath the trees. The other two had reached nearby branches, while their mother remained close, continuing to watch over them. The family had survived, but the home that had sheltered them was gone. This photograph is the last image of all five owls together in the only home they had ever known. When I pressed the shutter at 11:32 AM on June 3, 2026 I thought I was photographing five beautiful Long-eared Owls. Instead, I unknowingly preserved their final family portrait.
