The quiet grandeur of the coastal rainforest makes me feel small as I sit at the river's edge, camera in hand, waiting for that dark figure to emerge from the edge of the woods. The silence is palpable other than the odd fish splashing from the river. It's salmon spawning season, and like ghosts, the black bears make brief appearances before gorging on fish and then disappearing like a dream back into the thick, damp forests.
