Light into Darkness

This photo is the result of an randomly observed late day moment which turned into a two-day project. While vacationing about an hour's drive north of Quebec City, I had glanced up just in time to see the sun descending rather beautifully 'into' a Laurentian mountainside ridge of conifers. Shortly thereafter, it was gone. Afterwards, I thought about that a bit. And I slept on it. The next day arrived. By late afternoon I knew it was going to remain clear and sunny. This time I was better prepared with my camera and telephoto lens - solar filter threaded on - mounted on my sturdy tripod, Many sequential captures later (using a wireless remote shutter), this particular sun-into-the-trees silhouette composition was the best of them. An exciting capture moment, and a photography experiment gone right!

Moody Reflection

With a pending mid-October snowfall on the way, the grey clouds create a subdued reflection of Mount Rundle. The mid-tone contrasts bring a different perspective of the mountain over the Vermillion Lakes. In the background a call of a hidden loon echoed off the water.

Making Memories

Witnessing a father and son fishing along the Bow River in Canmore, AB, is a reminder of how fortunate we are to live in a country where making memories with epic views happens every day. A simple outing for this duo captures the fast moving waters under the Old Engine Bridge with the Three Sisters watching over.

Ferry Crossing Dawson City Yukon

"Ferry Crossing Dawson City Yukon" by Debbie Oppermann. The George Black Ferry carries vehicles back and forth across the Yukon River at Dawson City Yukon Territory. West Dawson and Sunnydale has approximately 200 residents that choose to live there off the grid. The Top Of The World Highway, highway 9, runs from West Dawson to Highway 5 junction in Alaska. Every fall, when the seasonal ferry stops running, the roughly 200 residents of West Dawson are forced to make a choice: hunker down at home and wait for the river to freeze, or find a place to stay in town.Most years, that period of West Dawson being effectively cut off from town ends when the river freezes over and people can safely cross. The Yukon government typically builds and maintains an ice-road crossing for vehicles.

Snapped this big fella this morning calling out to the neighbourhood. The moon was setting nearby and I was able to climb a spot nearby to line it up before it took off.

This long exposure shot was taken from the shore of Driftwood beach in Waterton. I used a piece of driftwood to frame the Prince of Wales hotel in the distance. The sun had gone down and it was taken during blue hour

Sunrise Silhouette

It would seem I wasn't the only one up to appreciate the morning sunrise. A pair of Brewer's Blackbirds sat perched nearby on a log on a Victoria, BC shoreline, also taking in the sight.
